Gum disease is a significant threat to adult teeth. In fact, it’s the main reason for extracting teeth, perniciously attacking the gums and affecting your general and oral health.

The good news is that our dentists can deliver treatment to target the debilitating symptoms of gum disease and protect your natural teeth in the future.

How can we help you?

We can provide clinical treatment and tailored educational guidance and plans to help reduce unpleasant symptoms and your risk of gum disease.

Our hygienists use an advanced cleaning system, EMS Airflow, underpinned by Swiss innovation. This minimally invasive and accurate cleaning system forms part of the GBT method (Guided Biofilm Therapy), which accurately diagnoses and delivers vital treatment to remove plaque deposits from teeth.

Additional benefits of the GBT system include increased comfort from warm rather than cold water, effective stain removal, and a smooth, plaque-free tooth surface.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

We understand that choosing the right dental treatment can come with many questions. To help you feel informed and confident in your care, we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions about this treatment. Our friendly team is always here to help if you need further information.

What is gum disease?

Gum is a progressive disease affecting your gums, the supporting structure between your teeth and jaw. It is the main reason adults lose their teeth, and it can hurt their overall health, not just their oral health, causing gum disease and diabetes.

Gum disease is caused by plaque buildup over a long period. Plaque bacteria then attack the supporting jawbone, putting people at risk of losing their teeth.

How do hygienist appointments prevent gum disease?

Your hygienist removes the solidified plaque from your gum line. While brushing and flossing help to remove plaque at home, some plaque gets left behind, building up over time.

Even patients with an exemplary oral hygiene routine will sustain some plaque along their gum line. For this reason, routine hygienist appointments are essential for everyone, regardless of age or oral hygiene status.

The longer plaque lingers along your gum line, the more likely you are to develop gum disease and its destructive symptoms.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

The early onset of gum disease can often produce no obvious symptoms, so visits to the hygienist are essential to ensure nothing goes undetected.

Some classic symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Bleeding gums.
  • Gum recession.
  • Red and inflamed gums.
  • Loose teeth.
  • Bad breath.

How are symptoms of gum disease treated?

We can treat gum disease with root surface debridement, removing the hardened plaque underneath the gum line.

After healing the gums, the gum line seals around the teeth again, preventing further plaque buildup.

Why choose Bromsgrove Dental Specialists?

Our hygienists are friendly and personable individuals who can communicate clearly and, most importantly, empathise. When delivering your treatment and guiding you on future prevention, they will explain why they are recommending any given treatment and be transparent about your gum disease risk and the limitations of treatment.

If you are feeling a little nervous about treatment, we offer IV (intravenous) sedation, which many of our patients describe as ‘magic’ for managing their phobia and nerves.

We care for many patients who come in to see us after failed dental work elsewhere, and we pride ourselves on finding solutions for you (even if you have been denied treatment in the past or something might not have gone to plan at another dental practice). We will always find a way forward for you.
